First Dance Song Ideas
Slow & Romantic
Shallow – Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper
Slow, passionate and an intense build up. An absolutely stunning choice for a romantic first dance, don’t you think?! I feel like this one gets into your soul.
A Thousand Years – Christina Perri
‘I have loved you for a thousand years, I’ll love you for a thousand more…’
With lyrics like that, why would you need to look any further than this glistening anthem for the hope(full) romantic?!
All of Me – John Legend
‘All of me loves all of you’
You could pretty much write your vows with the lyrics of All of Me by John Legend. Infact, why don’t you?! But also, why not stick this belter on as a passionate adoration of your other half during your first dance?!
Your Song – Elton John
Oh Elton and those classic tones.
This song has been a feature at weddings-a-thousand since it’s debut in 1970, and it’s really easy to hear why. Life really is wonderful now your other half is in the world, right?! Why wouldn’t you want to float around the dance floor to lyrics like that?
Or if you’re a Moulin Rouge fan like myself, you may prefer the sweet tones of a very easy on the ears Ewan McGreggor, and have his version from the movie soundtrack play instead.
Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran
If you are going to be loving your darlin’ till you’re 70, then perhaps Ed Sheeran’s beautiful ballad will be the song of choice for your first dance. Hopefully you can pull of some epic choreo like Ed himself in the video!
Hero – Enrique Iglesias
Who wouldn’t want Enrique at their wedding? (At the altar, next to you too? HA!)
This 2000’s hit is such a cheesy and completely perfect first dance song.
Time After Time – Eva Cassidy (originally Cyndi Lauper)
Now don’t get us wrong, the Cyndi Lauper version of this song is also absolutely incredible, and an all time classic.
But the Eva Cassidy version gets into the depths of your soul like no other version. And really, aren’t we going into the depths of our soul for the first dance?!
When a Man Loves a Woman – Percy Sledge
‘When a man loves a woman, can’t keep his mind on nothin’ else, he’s changed the world for the good thing he’s found.’
Oh Percy! With the intensely romantic lyrics to this all time classic, you really need look no further for the perfect song to dive into your newly, joined in matrimony, partners eyes to.
Feels Like Home – Chantel Kreviazuk
‘Something in your eyes makes me want to lose myself’
This lesser known hit by Chantel Kreviazuk, is an absolute stunner of a love song, all about the one you love feeling like home to you, and wow, if there was a better sentiment for a first dance song, I haven’t yet heard it!
I Won’t Give Up – Jason Mraz
A perfect promise of a song to start your married days to.
Promise you won’t give up on each other, even during those tough times, whilst you twirl and flow around the dancefloor!
At Last – Etta James
Another ultimate classic, and with good reason.
This slow and smooth classic is the perfect melody to drift around a dancefloor with your beloved to.
Can’t Help Falling in Love – Elvis Presley
I can’t help falling in love with every version of this perfect song.
This is the song I walked down the (beachy) aisle to, so it definitely holds a very special place in my heart! With so many wonderful and stunning versions to choose from, it can be tricky! Personally, we chose the Darren Hayes (of Savage Garden) version, and it was perfect for us.
Unchained Melody – Righteous Brothers
You may know this song for itself, you may know it from the pottery scene in Ghost, or, if you’re a Brit, you may know the Robson and Jerome version (ha!), but however you know it, can we all agree that Unchained Melody deserves it’s position as a notorious choice for the first dance.
Slow, romantic and purely classical.
Faster and Upbeat
Can’t Take my Eyes off of You – Lauryn Hill
Yes! This cover of Can’t Take my Eyes off of You by Lauryn Hill (of the Fugees) is an perfect upbeat, loving and joyful song to bounce your way around the dance floor to!

My Girl by the Temptations is bouncy, it’s romantic, it’s fun and it’s one to get you and your partner jiving around your reception dance floor!
Marry You – Bruno Mars
If you’re going for a choreographed dance, this one is a winner!
It’s an absolute belter for bopping around to, and very much on point of the topic of the day, huh?
I Wanna Dance with Somebody – Whitney Houston
Another classic, and I think I’m ready to get myself a perm and dance into the wee hours!
If you want another gleeful and great for some upbeat choreo type song, then you won’t go wrong with this classic by the late and great Whitney Houston.
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
If you feel like there’s no mountain high enough, no valley low enough and no river wide enough to stop you and your loved one being together, then perhaps this classic song by Marvin & Tammi will be the perfect choice for you first bop around the dance floor.
Still Into You – Paramore
Whether you’re already into pop rock, or whether you just fancy something a little edgier for your first dance, look no further than Still Into You by Paramore.

Stand by Me – Ben E. King
Somewhere between an upbeat and a slow dance, Ben E. King’s classic love song is such a great choice.
I’ve Had the Time of my Life – Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
Dirty Dancing anyone? Perhaps not so much at a family wedding, but the famous, final scene from the movie is the perfect inspiration for your dreamy first dance…
It’s just a shame it’s not Swayze you’re dancing with, right?
